Black mold smells musty and earthy, a lot like wet socks, damp cardboard, or rotting leaves. The smell often gets stronger on humid days, after a rainstorm, or when your air conditioner kicks on.
Here is the catch: most types of mold smell about the same. Your nose can tell you mold is growing, but it can’t tell you if it’s “black mold” or a common household mold. At Edifice Inspections, our ASHI-certified inspectors follow that musty smell to its source in homes across the Atlanta area every week.
Below, you’ll learn what causes the smell, where it hides, how to tell it apart from other odors, and when to call a pro.
What Does Black Mold Smell Like?
Black mold has a musty, earthy, damp smell. Most people describe it in one of these ways:
- Musty, like an old basement or a closet that has been shut for months
- Earthy, like wet dirt or a pile of rotting leaves
- Damp and stale, like wet socks, a sour towel, or a library book that got wet
- Woody, like rotting wood or a damp log
- Sharp or sour, when the growth is large or growing fast
The strength of the smell gives you a clue. A faint, on-and-off smell can mean a small patch or mold that is drying out. A strong smell that hits you when you walk into a room usually means active growth and an ongoing water problem.
“Black mold” is a nickname people often use for Stachybotrys chartarum, a greenish-black mold that grows on wet drywall, wood, and paper. But many other molds look dark too, and they give off the same kind of smell.
Why Does Mold Smell Musty?
Mold smells because it releases gases as it grows. These gases are called microbial volatile organic compounds, or mVOCs. According to the EPA’s guidance on what mold smells like, mVOCs often have strong or unpleasant odors and can be the source of the “moldy” or musty smell in a building.
Two common mVOCs do most of the work:
- 1-octen-3-ol, which gives damp spaces that classic musty smell
- Geosmin, which has an earthy smell people can pick up in tiny amounts (it’s the same compound behind the smell of soil after rain)
The EPA puts it plainly: a moldy odor suggests mold is growing in the building and should be looked into. So if you smell it, trust your nose.
Does Black Mold Smell Different From Other Mold?
No. You can’t identify black mold by its smell. Stachybotrys and the other common indoor molds (like Cladosporium, Aspergillus, and Penicillium) all put off a similar musty odor.
Color doesn’t settle it either. Plenty of harmless-looking molds are black, and some Stachybotrys looks more green or gray. The only way to know the exact species is a lab test.
Here is the good news: the species doesn’t change what you should do. The CDC’s facts about mold say all molds should be treated the same when it comes to health risks and removal.
That means you find the moisture, fix it, and clean or remove the mold, no matter what it’s called.
Mold vs. Mildew vs. Other Musty Smells
Not every stale smell in a house is mold. This table helps you narrow it down before you start tearing into walls.
| Smell | What it’s like | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mold | Musty, earthy, damp, stays around | Hidden water leak, high humidity, wet materials | Walls, crawlspace, under sinks, HVAC |
| Mildew | Lighter, stale, like damp laundry | Surface growth in bathrooms and on fabric | Shower grout, towels, window sills |
| Sewer gas | Rotten eggs | Dry P-trap, cracked vent pipe, bad wax ring | Unused drains, toilets, basement floor drains |
| Dirty AC coil | “Dirty socks” when the AC or heat turns on | Mold or bacteria on the coil or drain pan | Air handler, condensate drain, filter |
| Dead animal | Sweet, rotten, gets worse fast | Rodent in a wall, attic, or crawlspace | Attic, crawlspace, wall cavities |
| Pet urine | Sharp, like ammonia | Urine soaked into carpet pad or subfloor | Carpet, baseboards, subfloor |
| Stale water | Sour, swampy | Washing machine gasket, dehumidifier bucket | Front-load washer, drip pans |
Mildew is a type of mold, just an early, surface-level one. It’s easier to wipe away. A mold smell that sticks around after you clean the bathroom usually means growth is coming from somewhere you can’t see.
Where Mold Smells Hide in Your Home
The source of a mold smell is almost always near water. Start your search in the spots where moisture collects.
Inside Walls and Behind Drywall
A slow leak from a pipe, window, or roof can soak the back of drywall for months before you see a stain. The paper on drywall is mold food. Signs include a musty smell near one wall, bubbling paint, soft spots, or baseboards pulling away. Mold growing on drywall is tricky because the worst growth is often on the side you can’t see.
Basements and Crawlspaces
Many Atlanta-area homes sit on crawlspaces, and Georgia’s humid summers push moist air right into them. That damp air rises into your living space and carries the smell with it. If your home has a basement, our guide to mold in the basement walks through the common causes.
Many homeowners find that running a crawl space dehumidifier cuts the musty smell in the whole house.
HVAC System and Air Vents
If the smell shows up when the air turns on, look at your HVAC. Mold can grow on the evaporator coil, in a clogged condensate drain pan, or inside ductwork. The system then blows the smell through every room.
The Attic
Roof leaks, bath fans that vent into the attic, and poor airflow can all cause mold on roof sheathing and rafters. Good attic ventilation helps keep that space dry.
Bathrooms, Kitchens, and Laundry Rooms
Check under sinks, behind the toilet, around the dishwasher, and behind the washing machine. Front-load washers are famous for a musty gasket. Closets on outside walls and carpet that got wet and never fully dried are other common spots.
Can You Smell Mold but Not See It?
Yes, and it happens a lot. A musty smell with no visible mold usually means the growth is hidden inside a wall, under flooring, in the crawlspace, or in your ductwork.
There is also a twist that fools many homeowners: nose blindness. When you live with a smell every day, your brain starts tuning it out. Guests may notice a musty smell that you no longer can.
Try these steps to follow your nose:
- Leave the house for 15 minutes, then come back in and take a slow breath at the front door.
- Sniff room by room. Get low near baseboards and floor vents, then check near the ceiling.
- Turn the HVAC on and off. If the smell gets stronger when air is moving, the system is a suspect.
- Look for water clues like stains, peeling paint, warped floors, rusty nails, or condensation on windows.
- Open cabinets and closets that stay closed most of the time.
- Use a moisture meter on walls and floors near the smell. Readings that are much higher than nearby spots point to hidden water.
Is Black Mold Smell Dangerous?
The smell itself is a warning sign, not usually the main danger. The EPA notes that exposure to mVOCs has been linked to headaches, nasal irritation, dizziness, tiredness, and nausea, though more research is needed.
The bigger concern is the mold that makes the smell. Mold can trigger allergy and asthma symptoms like sneezing, a stuffy nose, itchy eyes, coughing, and wheezing. People with asthma, allergies, weak immune systems, or lung disease are at higher risk.
If anyone in your home has symptoms that get better when they leave the house, that is worth taking seriously.
You don’t need to panic over the words “toxic black mold.” Some molds, including Stachybotrys, can make mycotoxins, but the CDC says there is no test that ties Stachybotrys to specific health problems. Treat any mold as something to fix, and fix it soon.
How to Get Rid of a Musty Mold Smell
The only lasting way to get rid of a mold smell is to stop the moisture and remove the mold. Air fresheners, candles, and sprays just cover it up for a few hours.
- Find and fix the water source. Repair leaks, clear clogged gutters, and make sure the ground slopes away from your foundation.
- Dry wet materials fast. The EPA says drying wet materials within 24 to 48 hours usually keeps mold from growing.
- Lower your humidity. The EPA recommends keeping indoor humidity below 60 percent, and ideally between 30 and 50 percent. Learn more about ideal basement humidity levels.
- Clean small areas yourself. If the moldy area is less than about 10 square feet (roughly a 3-foot by 3-foot patch), you can usually clean hard surfaces with detergent and water. Wear gloves, goggles, and an N95 mask.
- Throw out porous items that are moldy. Moldy carpet pads, ceiling tiles, and insulation usually can’t be saved.
- Never mix cleaners. Mixing bleach and ammonia creates toxic gas. Read why in our post on whether ammonia kills mold.
If the smell comes back after cleaning, the water problem hasn’t been fixed or there is more mold you haven’t found.
Related Questions to Explore
What does mold smell like in walls?
Mold in walls smells musty and damp, and the smell is usually strongest near the floor, around outlets, or along one section of wall. You may also see bubbling paint, stains, or soft drywall. A leak inside the wall is the most common cause.
Why does my house smell musty but I can’t find mold?
Your house may smell musty because mold is hidden in the crawlspace, ductwork, or wall cavities. High humidity alone can also make carpet, furniture, and closets smell stale. A dry drain trap or a dirty AC coil can smell musty too, so check those first.
Does black mold smell like urine?
Mold usually smells musty, not like urine. A sharp ammonia smell more often comes from pet urine soaked into carpet or subfloor. Urine-soaked materials stay damp and can grow mold over time, so you may end up with both smells.
Can black mold kill you?
For most healthy people, no. Mold is more likely to cause allergy-type symptoms, asthma flare-ups, or irritation. People with weak immune systems or serious lung disease face a higher risk of infection. The CDC says a link between Stachybotrys and severe illness has not been proven.
What does black mold look like?
Black mold often looks like dark green, gray, or black spots or patches. It can be slimy when wet and powdery when dry. It grows on drywall, wood, paper, and ceiling tiles that stay wet. See our guide on what mold looks like on wood for photos and tips.
What does mildew smell like?
Mildew smells lighter than mold, a bit like damp laundry or a stale towel. It grows on surfaces in bathrooms, on fabric, and around windows. Mildew wipes away with regular cleaning, while mold often grows deeper into materials.
When to Call a Professional
A musty smell you can’t trace is a good reason to call in a pro. Call a mold inspector if:
- The smell lasts even after you clean and air out the house
- You can smell mold but can’t see any
- The moldy area is larger than about 10 square feet
- You had a leak or flood that wasn’t dried within 48 hours
- Someone in the home has allergies or breathing symptoms that ease when they leave
- You’re buying or selling a home and want to know what’s behind the walls
During a professional mold inspection, our inspectors use thermal imaging and moisture meters to find wet areas you can’t see. When it helps, we take air samples inside and outside the home so the lab can compare the two. The goal isn’t just to name the mold. It’s to find the moisture that feeds it, so the problem stays fixed. You’ll get a clear report within 24 hours, and if mold is found, it gives your mold remediation company a map of where to work.
Edifice Inspections has served homeowners and buyers across the greater Atlanta area since 1998. If you’re buying a home, a full home inspection can catch leaks and moisture problems before they turn into mold.
Conclusion
A musty, earthy smell is your home’s way of telling you there’s moisture where it shouldn’t be. Keep these points in mind:
- Black mold smells musty and earthy, but so do most other molds. Smell can’t tell you the species.
- The smell almost always leads back to water, so fix the moisture first.
- A lingering smell with no visible mold usually means hidden growth.
